Middle School, Gr 5-8 » Math

Math

St. Anne Catholic School offers five math courses.                                                                          The first three Math I, Math II, and Math III are a tiered approach to teaching the skills and concepts to succeed in algebra.  The next two are algebra at either the middle school or high school level.

Math I
In fifth grade students will:
  • Transition from elementary school to middle school math.
  • Learn about the different types of numbers, and recognize number patterns.
  • Be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals and fractions.
  • Convert between decimals and fractions.
  • Understand and learn about negative numbers using integers.
  • Begin solving basic (one step) equations with integers.
  • Learn to use the properties to solve problems.
  • Be introduced to ratios, proportions, percents, and probability.
  • Be introduced to the metric system with measurement.

Math II                                                                                                                                              In sixth grade students will:
  • Expand the depth of Math I while adding additional concepts.
  • Look at decimal patterns.
  • Learn how to use exponents.
  • Expand their use of the order of operations.
  • Learn ways to display data in different statistical displays.
  • Understand the meaning of absolute value.
  • Plot points on the coordinate plane, and learn about slope.
  • Be able to fluently move between fractions, decimals and percents.
  • Apply percentages to solve problems.
  • Expand their understanding of probability to include permutations, combinations, independent and dependent events.
  •  Learn the geometry of circles, triangles, polygons, and angles.
Math III (Typically for 7th graders)                                                                                                    In seventh grade students will:
  • Expand the depth of Math II while adding additional concepts.
  • Learn to solve algebra word problems.
  • Add rational numbers to their understanding of the numbers systems and number patterns.
  • Learn about  the Pythagorean Theorem and how to apply it to solve real world problems.
  • Learn to solve percent equations.
  • Study proportions, triangles, and polygons in geometry.
  • Learn about congruency, angles, and right triangles, including area, volume, surface area and 3 dimensions.
  • Continue with statistics learning ways to display data and include matrices.
  • Learn to solve multi-step equations and inequalities.
  • Graph solutions to equations and inequalities in one and two dimensions.
  • Identify linear functions and slope.
High School Algebra I  (Typically for 8th graders)                                                                   Middle School Algebra  (Typically for 8th graders)                                                                      The algebra course is offered at two different levels depending on the student's ability.                  The high school Algebra I course is the same course a student would take in high school. Upon successful completion of this course the student may skip Algebra I in high school and go to geometry or Algebra II.  The middle school algebra course covers the same concepts but at a less rigorous level introducing and practicing the skills and concepts for the student to be successful in high school Algebra I.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              In eighth grade students will:
  • Solve multi-step equations and inequalities in one and two dimensions.
  • Identify linear functions and slope.
  • Use variables when solving linear equations.
  • Solve and graph compound inequalities.
