Social Studies

5th and 6th grade social studies:
In fifth and sixth grade students will:
  • Work to bring history alive and develop an understanding of early humans and River Valley Civilizations, and the role geography had on their settlement.
  • Continue building upon historical thinking skills, while focusing on the concepts of empire, religion, and government, examining the impact of Ancient Greece and Rome on our modern society.
  • Focus on geography with the intention of building greater knowledge and understanding of world geography and expanding their perspective of the world. 
  • Study the continents of the world, and the five themes of geography: location, place, and human interaction with the environment, movement, and regions. 
  • Continue with their study of world history, covering the medieval and Renaissance time periods.
 
7th and 8th grade social studies:
In seventh and eighth grade students will:
  • Explore American history topics spanning the Colonization of the Americas to World War Two and the Holocaust including the creation and foundations of our government, expansion of our country's borders, contributions of important Americans, and how our country has been shaped by diversity. 
  • Continue to practice critical and historical thinking skills by analyzing primary and secondary sources
  • Study current events weekly to help maintain a knowledgeable level of awareness of our local, regional, national, and international news.
  • Have the option to extend their study of U.S. History with the biannual seventh and eighth grade trip to Washington, D.C.
