3rd Grade

Welcome to third grade! Here, we start each day with prayer and put God at our center. We begin the day with reading and expand on concepts and skills from second grade. For example: main idea/supporting details, sequencing, cause and effect, author's purpose, making inferences/drawing conclusions, grammar, comparing and contrasting, fact and opinion, as well as character traits. We enjoy a brain break and even get outside if the weather is nice! Math comes next and we again, expand on second grade skills but also introduce new skills. A few include: place value, rounding, measurement and data, and money. Students are introduced to multiplication and division skills, fractions, and percentages/decimals.

The afternoon tends to be filled with more exploration and discovery. We dig into our Next Gen science curriculum which gets students engaged and active in their learning. Concepts and skills include: forces around us, life cycles, different enironments, and observing weather. Our social studies focus in third grade is geography, especially United States geography.

Finally, third graders wrap up their day with writing and religion. Writing includes building upon previously taught skills in the conventions of writing and demonstrating proper mechanics. We focus on persuasive writing and personal narratives. Our day ends with religion. Just as we begin our day in prayer, so shall we end it. During our religion classes, students learn how to be better disciples of Jesus and how to show God’s love. Some topics include: Works of Mercy, Beatitudes, 10 Commandments, and the saints. Students learn about the liturgical and church calendar. Students also write monthly Prayer Partner letters.

We learn and grow in a fun, safe, and prayerful atmosphere. Welcome to third grade!
