1st Grade

Welcome to First Grade!

Prayer begins, ends, and is woven throughout each day.  We learn about the Holy Trinity, the lives of saints, read stories about the ehroes/heroines of the Bible, and learn how much God loves us. We follow the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies curriculum, so each week we hear Gospel stories on a level that makes sense to them while participating in activities that bring the readings to life. One of the highlights is leading several Masses throughout the year.

First graders’ reading and writing skills truly take flight in first grade. Independent work skills are built while participating in whole group instruction, guided reading, and Daily 5 to learn phonics rules, comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, handwriting, and more.

During math, we focus our learning on number sense, fact fluency, problem solving skills, time, money, and measurement. These are skills that give students the tools and confidence they need to learn more advanced concepts down the road.

Students are introduced to four science units including plants, animals, light and shadows, and sky patterns through collaborative, STEM-based activities to spark student curiosity and empower them to think more critically.

In social studies, we learn about communities, including community helpers; government and our country; mapping; needs and wants; holidays and traditions; and past and present times.  The Scholastic News magazine allows weekly opportunities to expand our learning of what is going on in the world around us.

The first graders see specialists for physical education, art, music, Spanish, and computers.
